Good questions before a lock change.
A few details can make the conversation clearer. These answers help you describe a request; the available work still depends on the property, hardware or vehicle.
Your building
Is the problem with my apartment door or the shared entrance?
Describe the first door that prevents access. If the common entrance opens but your unit does not, say so. Shared hardware may be managed separately and should involve the responsible property contact.
What should I have ready for a managed building?
Give the full address, unit and entrance, explain the issue and identify the person who can authorize work. Ask what information is needed to establish your authority over the property. Do not send building passwords or unrelated personal documents as routine call details.
What if a university or facilities office controls access?
Use the responsible facilities or security team to coordinate the request. Nearby streets and university-controlled buildings are different settings. LockReach does not claim a university affiliation or unrestricted access to institutional property.
Keys & hardware
Does a missing key mean the whole lock must be replaced?
Not always. Rekeying may change access on a suitable working cylinder while other hardware stays. Existing damage, compatibility and shared-key requirements affect the options.
Can several locks work with one key?
That depends on their cylinders and the existing key arrangement. List the doors and any known brands or master-key system. A single-key arrangement cannot be promised for every combination of installed hardware.
Does rekeying also remove keypad codes?
No. A mechanical key change and electronic code or account changes are separate. Identify all relevant access methods so the right person can discuss each one.
Why mention that I have to lift the door?
That detail may point to a fit or alignment issue that deserves assessment alongside the lock. Replacing hardware alone does not necessarily correct the way the door meets the frame.
Can a modern keypad fit an older door?
Possibly, but the product and existing preparation must be checked. Have the model details ready and describe the current lock. Age or appearance alone does not establish compatibility.
What helps identify an unusual lockset?
A visible manufacturer or model, the type of door and a clear explanation of the fault can help. Do not dismantle the hardware to identify it. If an image is requested, focus on the hardware without including keys, codes or unrelated private information.
Vehicles & business
Is a car lockout the same as a lost-key job?
No. Opening a vehicle with keys inside is different from replacing missing keys. State whether a working key exists and whether the vehicle uses a key or push-button start.
Why do you ask for the vehicle year?
Key and starting systems vary between models and model years. The make, model, year and remaining-key situation help assess compatibility; a brand name alone is not enough.
Which business entrance should I identify?
Name the customer door, staff door, delivery entrance or tenant suite that needs attention. Include other doors only if they are part of the requested scope and the authorized contact can approve them.
Planning the work
What should a locksmith estimate explain?
Ask about the visit, labor, parts, number of included locks and any vehicle programming. Describe damage or unusual access conditions. Confirm which amounts are estimates and what could change after assessment.
What if more work is needed after inspection?
Ask for an explanation of the issue and the revised scope and price before authorizing additional work. A different part or a door-fit problem can change the work being proposed.
How do I describe a garage or rear entrance?
Give the property or parking address, the accessible entrance and a level or unit if relevant. For a vehicle, add a description that helps identify it. Use landmarks as extra context, not as a replacement for the address.
Can I call about Arlington, Medford, Newton or Watertown?
Yes. Provide the full address and the type of work. Availability and timing need to be confirmed for that request; the area guides do not represent separate offices or guaranteed coverage.
